Greek Designs
The richness and variety of Greek designs, as represented in the drawings of this book, remind us of the many other extraordinary achievements of the Greeks. Borders framing vase paintings, friezes carved on buildings, emblems placed on coins and other ornaments are exquisitely designed. Patterns of plant forms are elegantly varied, meanders expanded, elaborated or curtailed, fish, fowl, mammals or monsters are organized into decorative designs. A clear and concise introduction outlines the historical background to the designs, and touches on the many themes represented in vase painting, sculpture, architecture and coinage amongst others. Useful information is provided in the notes on the materials, techniques and sources of each design illustrated.

Richard Seaford argues that a large part of the answer can be found in another momentous development, the invention and rapid spread of coinage. By transforming social relations, monetization contributed to the concepts of the universe as an impersonal system (fundamental to Presocratic philosophy) and of the individual alienated from his own kin and from the gods, as found in tragedy.

Proto-Greek language - The Proto-Greek language is the common ancestor of the Greek dialects, including the Mycenean language, the classical Greek dialects Attic-Ionic, Aeolic, Doric and North-Western Greek, and ultimately the Koine and Modern Greek. Some scholars would include the fragmentary Ancient Macedonian language, either as descended from an earlier "Proto-Hellenic" language, or by definition including it among the descendents of Proto-Greek.

Ancient Greek - Ancient Greek refers to the stage in the history of the Greek language corresponding to Classical Antiquity, which normally applies to two periods of Greek history: Archaic and Classical Greece.
